The Burning is coming to BD!

Slasher fans of the world rejoice. The wonderful people at the US company Scream Factory announced there line up of Blu-Ray heavy hitters for 2013 this past weekend at the Horror Hound Convention in Indianapolis. Shortly after which they posted the following on Facebook,

'***EXCLUSIVE "SUPER-SIZED" ANNOUNCE!***

The wait is over! We can now officially reveal some really cool and beloved horror classics from the 80s that will be coming from the "Factory" in 2013:

- THE FOG (1980): John Carpenter's seaside g
hostly revenge flick with Adrienne Barbeau and Jamie Lee Curtis. New extras are in the works! First time on Blu-ray

- THE BURNING (1981): Summer Camp. Garden shears. Tom Savini effects. Need we say more? First time on Blu-ray

- THE HOWLING (1981): Joe Dante's ultimate werewolf pic with superb Rob Bottin effects. First time on Blu-ray.

- LIFEFORCE (1985): Tobe Hooper's space vampires and light-show extravaganza finally gets its first ever anamorphic widescreen presentation! First time on Blu-ray.

- NIGHT OF THE COMET (1984): Shopping and zombies highlight this post-Doomsday cult classic. First time on Blu-ray.

- DAY OF THE DEAD (1985): George Romero's splattery undead classic gets a new collector's edition with new extras.

More details on all of these frightfests will be revealed more next year. Have a great weekend!'
I think we can all agree there's something for every Horror fan in that awesome selection. Not to mention that Scream Factory do a superb job of creating new content and presenting there films with the best possible available image quality. Frankly I'm excited. None has got more excited than the announcement of The Burning however. Why am I so excited you ask? Well I've never seen The Burning. Not especially unusual as there are many classic Slasher movies I haven't seen and many I have but The Burning is something I've come so close to seeing so often that I was beginning to think it would never happen. Its definitely in my Top 5 Most Wanted Blu-Ray Slasher Movies. Hey now there's an idea, I love a good list.

Nail Gun Massacre coming in 2013

Some very exciting news from Code Red today. They are making there first steps in the world of Blu Ray in 2013 with The Electric Chair and Slasher classic Nail Gun Massacre.

Taken from Code Red's News Blog
'NAIL GUN MASSACRE (Blu-Ray 002) with a brand new 2012 HD 1.78 transfer and a new 2012 HD fullframe boom mic cut and more dvd extras by original extra creator Loyd Cryer.'
This is cracking news. Hopefully we can look forward to more of there catalogue coming to Blu-Ray. Lets hope they sell well. We really need more niche labels putting out BDs hopefully now its financially viable for them. From what I've read Code Red do there utmost to create good transfers and its always been sad that they haven't made it over to BD. That looks like its going to change thankfully.

Warner acquires the Friday the 13th license...

Potentially very exciting news. Warner have acquired the Friday the 13th license from Paramount.

Daniel Farrands has confirmed on his Facebook page:

'It's confirmed that Warner Bros. DID acquire the F13th titles from Paramount. But they haven't yet decided whether they will release a full Blu-ray box set or simply release "one offs" of each title. Stay tuned.'

Paramount seemed to be sitting on the remainder of the franchise rather than releasing them to Blu-ray. Hopefully we will get a Box set similarly to the Nightmare on Elm Street collection that Warner released. The really great thing about this deal is Warner already owns the New Line Cinema entries to the series so we could get the whole franchise for the first time in one Blu-ray Box Set.

I really hope this happens soon because I need me some Jason Lives and Jason X in glorious HD.

Cabin in the Woods UK BD Replacement Service

Howdy, just a quickie. I've had an issue with playback of Cabin in the Woods and looking at various forums I'm not alone. My pre-order of the UK Blu-ray arrived early Saturday morning so I gave it a blast and the main feature temporarily freezes around ten times during playback. Its similar to how dual layer DVDs use to freeze as it shifts layers. The disc has now been recalled and Lionsgate are offering a replacement service.

E-Mail a copy of your order information as proof of purchase and your address to Cabin@technicolor.com to receive a replacement disc.

I've yet to watch the PIP Bonusview mode but the rest of the extras are really nice. Once this issue is resolved this should be a must have for Slasher/Horror fans.

Slasher musings

So I've had a fun week. Been on Holiday visiting family and I brought a couple of classics back with me to watch with an old mate of mine. Really good night it was to. A few beers, My Bloody Valentine and The Prowler are exactly the way I like a holiday. I have to say The Prowler is really growing on me. It felt a bit flat the first time round watching it but its much more fun than I gave it credit for. Savini's effects are great. Woke up the next morning and wouldn't you know it Scream 4 was on TV, which was nice. Talking of Scream 4 every time I watch it I like it more. Its probably the best sequel of the franchise and I'm sure it would have been more well regarded by critics etc if it had been the first sequel to Scream.

Hopefully when I get back home I'll have the new UK Puppet Master BD waiting for me.

Anyway, finally got round to alphabetizing the on going list of Slasher Movies NOT in my collection that are currently available on Blu-Ray.

The Big 100...well 101

Well this is it. I've just taken delivery of my one hundredth Slasher Movie on Blu-ray. Well wouldn't you know it, two show up at once. So its actually the big 101. The Uncut editions of Laid to Rest and Sweatshop have just been delivered from Austria. I'm not sure why it matters, it's not like I get to one hundred and I've completed a puzzle or something. But hey it feels like an achievement. It's taken more or less 2 years to grow my collection this big. Fortunately it's nowhere near the ultimate collection I set out to make yet. There are so many Slasher titles available that I've not got yet. Not to mention the cracking line up of upcoming BD's. It looks like I won't be done any time soon.

The following are listed on the Fox site as special features
Theatrical Feature Blu-ray
Feature Commentary with Director Tobe Hooper and Filmmaker David Gregory
Feature Commentary with Bill Moseley, Caroline Williams, Special Makeup Effects Creator Tom Savini and Content Producer Michael Felsher

It Runs in the Family
Original Theatrical Trailer

Audio: English Surround DTS-HD Master Audio 2.0, French Dolby Digital 1.0
Language: Subtitles: English SDH, Spanish
Theatrical Aspect Ratio: Widescreen: 1.78:1
I know there is a big cult following for this bad boy so it should make a lot of peoples day.  I'm very intrigued to see the film in HD. Every time I've seen it be it from late night TV or DVD its never really been up to much visually. I think if it has a decent transfer it could well blow me away.

Slasher Movie number 99!

I've been on a bit of a hiatus from Slasher movies for the last month or so. But I've found my slasher mojo again and ordered a number of German and Austrian Blu-rays.Thanks to the outstanding service of Amazon.de I've now received my 98th and 99th Slasher Blu-ray in under a week to the UK. I'm not sure why it matters but its fun to think I'm 1 away from the great 100 milestone. So tonight I will be cracking on with the Swedish made oddity, Insane (2010). I say oddity as it has a all Swedish cast but is in English. It looks like it could be right up my low budget street from the trailer, lol. After that then hopefully I'll fit in End of the Line (2007) which has come highly recommended to me.

There's some super cool stuff coming out the rest of the year so it's a great time to be a old school Slasher fan. Scream Factory in the US seem to be blazing a Slasher trail with re-release of Halloween 2 and the highly anticipated Terror Train and Deadly Blessing. Hopefully that's just the beginning for the them. Then there is Halloween 4 & 5 next month in the states from Starz/Anchor Bay. I haven't seen either in 10 to 15 years so they will be a real treat. The UK is getting the pleasure of the first 3 Puppet Master films remastered which again I haven't seen in years. Basically from a slow start this year is shaping up very nicely in the slasher department.

Check out the list of titles NOT in my collection for a complete run down of upcoming titles and their release dates. I try my best to keep it updated so that its a on going resource.

Halloween 4 & 5 BDs coming!

Oh heck yeah. Now this is what I'm talking about. If only other companies would follow suit.
"New special features. New commentaries. New HD transfers. HALLOWEEN 4 and 5 as you have never experienced them before!"
Quoted from Halloweenmovies.com

Excellent news I think you'll agree. I haven't seen Halloween 4 & 5 in probably 15 years. Really promising releases. Maybe even slasher BDs of the year contenders. Although I'm probably getting ahead of my self there.

More Mario Bava BD news

More great news from Redemption about there up coming Mario Bava BD....
"Some of Mario Bava's and horror cinema's most important films are to be released by Redemption on Blu-ray. The first batch includes the truly gothic masterpiece Mask of Satan aka Black Sunday starring the legendary Barbara Steele, the equally macabre Lisa and the Devil / House of Exorcism with Telly Savalas and the beautiful Elke Sommer with both versions included on a two disc release. Released at the same time is A Hatchet for the Honeymoon, Bava's intense depiction of insanity, oedipus-like desires and murdered brides all presented on a fabulous new HD master."
Quoted from Salvation-films.com

A Hatchet  for the Honeymoon is a title I've wanted to catch for ages. Super chuffed that I'll get the chance soon enough in HD.

Friday the 13th 4-8 BDs on hold?

Some really bad news from Fridaythe13thfranchise.com

"It is news no one wants to hear or read about, but the fact that fans have not had the opportunity to purchase the Paramount Blu-Ray releases of Friday The 13th: The Final Chapter through Friday the 13th Part 8: Jason Takes Manhattan has been a huge sore spot for fans the past three years. This writer contends that the DVD releases of these films are perfectly reasonable to own and are a great addition to the Friday The 13th film library with loads of extra content. The picture and sound quality for the 2009 Deluxe DVD releases are superb compared to earlier DVD releases, so you are urged to track this down and purchase them now. Here is the big reason why.

Paramount Pictures will not be releasing the Blu-Ray discs for the aforementioned remaining Paramount films anytime soon! We are told that it is basically a matter of financial viability. Simply put, it is believed that the studio will not make back enough money to produce Blu-Ray discs of the films. Internet piracy is the main culprit as many of our readers know someone that enjoys downloading films illegally online. The practice is all but killing the home video market and Paramount is wary of this. So, how can we get these long sought after films on Blu-Ray? Much the same way we got the Deluxe Edition DVD's and Blu-Rays the first time around, a new sequel in theaters.

We were informed that if Warner Brothers decides to greenlight a new sequel, then Paramount would be interested in releasing the other films on Blu-Ray. A brand new film raises awareness and creates an overall public need for the films on home video. One other way to possibly get The Final Chapter onward up to Jason Takes Manhattan released on Blu is for a huge critical and financial success of the new Crystal Lake Memories documentary. Although it seems less likely for the documentary to spearhead Blu-Ray resurgence for the Friday The 13th films, it is a possibility. Of course, this could all change at a drop of a hat, but the simple fact stance of right now is, that sadly, Paramount will not be releasing the Blu-Rays for the remaining Paramount Friday The 13th films in this calendar year. Beyond is another possibility."

Quoted from Fridaythe13thfanchise.com

If that's the case then its a true disappointment. I was under the impression they were considering late 2012 releases. Hopefully a market like the UK will get a box set similar to what happened with the Nightmare on Elm Street collection and the US will follow suite in  the future. Still very disheartening.

Mask Maker

FILM - Mask Maker aka Maskerade
DIRECTOR -  Griff Furst
YEAR - 2010
DISTRIBUTOR - 101 Films
RUN TIME - Approx 90 mins
VIDEO - 1080p
AUDIO -  English: 5.1 DTS-MA
REGION FREE
SLASHER

Ever heard the phrase 'what's old is new'? Well Mask Maker isn't quite that successful but it is very entertaining.

WARNING THIS WILL CONTAIN SOME SPOILERS

A crazed Witch and her deranged deformed Son are murdered by the local towns people when she kills a child. Years later a trendy 20 something couple buy the house where it all happened.  They get it at a bargain price so they can do up and sell it on. However when they get a group of friends over they unwittingly resurrect the axe wielding Son, the Mask Maker. Turns out it probably wasn't such a bargain after all, they end up paying with their heads.

I was pretty chuffed with this one. It has a mid 90s feel to it mixed  with what boils down to a greatest hits collection of scenes from other classic slashers. Often the scenes are not done quite as well but it makes for a very fun watch. If your looking for something new then its probably not the film for you but if like myself you wish there were more Slashers these days that give a nostalgic peak into classics of the past then this is well worth your time.

I really liked the cast and characters of this one. Its nice to go back to that 90s twenty something feel. They even dress more like young up and coming professionals from the mid 90s which really adds to the nostalgic feel of the film. If I had a criticism it would be the films lead played by Nikki Doloach (Days of Our Lives) is simultaneously attractive and irritating so I was never quite rooting for her but at the same time I sort of liked her to. The characters are fun and there's some good banter between the friends. Michael Berryman (The Hills Have Eyes) makes a appearance as the local shop owner and Terry Kiser (Weekend at Bernie's 1 & 2) does a great job as the local scary guy who warns the noobs.

The Mask Maker himself is simultaneously a pretty cool villain and a bit hokey. He's very similar to Jason Voorheess in stature and rips the heads from his victims to wear them as masks. There's no real reason explained for this other than he's deformed but it makes for a creepy character that also occasionally looks a bit daft.

His kills range from poor in the special effects department to pretty cool the further it gets in. They set up the kills quite nicely with characters almost telegraphing how they will die in conversation. Fortunately its not so heavy handed that it diminished the amusement of the setups.

I could probably have done without the flashbacks to the towns peoples execution of the Witch after the initial prologue. It probably would have been better served just to extend this introduction rather than be spliced every so often. But I'd rather have it than not at all because its its quite a cool scene.

As far as the production is concerned when the film started I was put off by the filtering they used. I'm a fan of vivid and bright colours and I found the dark autumn palette hard to enjoy at first but once they get to the old house and backwoods farm setting the aesthetic really suited the film and really gave it the right tone. There's some great lighting that really clicked with the palette.

The film as a whole flows quite well and clearly some care has gone into recreating the feel and style of older slashers. On occasion the film is slightly under and over edited for my taste which is a real shame. They come so very close to nailing the action/kill scenes but the edits just slightly off. Still though its more than serviceable at the same time. But then I did notice it so its worth a mention.

Mask Maker comes from UK Distributor 101 Films on Blu-ray. Its not available on BD anywhere else and is confirmed region free in case your wondering about importing. We aren't talking reference quality here but the picture quality is really quite nice to my eye. There is plenty of detail and its sharp. I'm sure its a fair step up in quality to the DVD edition. It's only real downside is unless you count a menu as an extra its completely devoid of Special Features. Its always a shame but I'm just happy it made it to Blu-Ray. There are so many Slashers that just never get a release, especially the lesser known direct to video ones.

In case you want to try before you buy Mask Maker is also available on US Netflix in HD at the moment but to be honest I think its well worth a purchase on Blu-Ray. For Slasher fans there is plenty to like about it even if there is very little new about it. Despite it borrowing heavily and not exactly delivering as well as its forefathers its really nice to revisit this style. Some might find it derivative I found it nostalgic. If every low budget Slasher was like this I'd be more than happy. I doubt it will happen but I'd love a sequel.

6 times shorter than you might think to pull some ones face off out of 10

Photos to follow. Obviously its going to take me some time but I plan to add some old reviews and then write new ones as this Blog and the collection chug along.

An Introduction...

Welcome to the Slasher Movie Blu-Ray Blog. For a while now I've been doing my best to collect the ultimate Slasher Movie collection on Blu-ray. I've been posting in a couple of threads across the net and updating on my collection for a year or two now. I thought it might be fun to set up a Blog to go along with the project.

By no means do I consider myself a authority on the technical aspects of Blu-Ray but I'll do my best to give my opinion on the picture quality and value of the disc as well as the films.

Its quite possible that every so often you'll scratch your head and wonder why I consider some of the films on my list Slasher Movies. I'm pretty wide in my interpretation of the Genre. There's your Slashers such as Friday the 13th, Halloween,  Hatchet, Scream etc which I think most would agree are the staple. But then you have your Mutant family Slashers such as Texas Chainsaw Massacre, House of 1000 Corpses, Hills Have Eyes etc or Supernatrual Slashers like Candyman, Dark Night of the Scarecrow and Husk. Not to mention Italian Giallo's like Suspiria, Deep Red and Torso. Basically I'm going by what I personally feel fits the criteria inevitably some will seem to fit more so than others.

As of the moment of posting I currently have 90 Slasher Movies on Blu-ray but there are obviously some gaping holes in my collection yet to be plugged. Not to mention the hundreds of titles that will hopefully be released in the future. One of the main aims of this Blog is to try and make it easier for people all over the net to see what is available and where. I've spent a fair bit of time trawling around gathering as much info as possible and I plan to relay that info here.

Please if you know of Slashers on Blu-ray I've missed from either my current collection or from my list of currently available titles I don't currently own let me know. Its a work in progress that particularly this Blog may take me a while to get the hang of. So bare with me.

Cheers
